The official report date for spring training isn’t for another twelve days, but some notable Boston Red Sox players have already made their way to Florida.
Rookie pitchers Matt Barnes and Drake Britton made took part in informal workouts and Will Middlebrooks has also arrived as he posted a picture via Twitter. Other attendees include Daniel Nava, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Alex Hassan.Barnes was invited by the Boston Red Sox to be in his first ever MLB spring training camp. Britton is already a part of the Red Sox 40-man MLB roster and is considered a prospect.
Players showing up already have a few things in common. Firstly, they are mostly young except Daniel Nava, who is 30 years of age. Secondly, and most importantly, their roles last season diminished or they weren’t big roles to begin with.
Middlebrooks and Nava lost playing time late in the season as Bogaerts, Drew, Gomes and Victorino stepped up huge in the playoffs. Those at camp early are probably looking to improve their skills in camp and are giving themselves the biggest window to do so. Either way they are coming in to camp with the right idea and that is to work hard to improve.
Not too many changes on the major league roster, but Cherington did do some minor tweaks as they retained Mike Napoli, signed Grady Sizemore, A.J. Pierzynski and Edward Mujica in free agency. They also traded for Alex Castellanos, Burke Badenhop and Jonathan Herrera.
Many more familiar faces are expected to be early in Florida as manager John Farrell is expected to be there by the end of the week. Farrell is expected to arrive by Friday and have a bunch more players there other than the ones already present.
