According to Dee Ford himself in talking with media, the Patriots and Buccaneers have interest in the projected first-round pass-rusher and have scheduled workouts with him. Ford, 6’2 240 pounds had 10.5 sacks in 2013.
The Patriots have a need at defensive end and especially one that can rush the passer, but many were calling for them to fill that vacancy through free agency. It is however true what most people say and that is you can’t build an entire team through free agency for financial reasons.
If the Patriots like what they see, they can possibly move up to get Ford, but they would likely have to move up as they currently have the 29th pick and a player like Ford could already be off the board by then. The only thing that could make Ford slide in the draft is the fact he suffered a knee injury last season, but it’s unlikely after what he showed in the Senior Bowl. Teams like the Buccaneers and Cincinnati are rumored to be interested and both teams pick before the Patriots.
Having a great Senior Bowl has put Ford on the radar of all the NFL teams and having success in the Senior Bowl has proven to raise draft status’ of college players. Even looking at last season with Central Michigan player Eric Fisher, who wowed teams at the Senior Bowl and went from being a late first-rounder to the number one overall pick.
The NFL Draft is May 8-10.
